Ancient Ruins – Benjamin Medrano
An entertaining fantasy of the Dungeons-and-Dragons school of writing. The protagonist is a dungeon. There’s a plot - an evil human kingdom is using demonic magic to conquer and enslave Elvish kingdoms - but the core of the book is the protagonist’s awakening, and her decision to enter the dungeon biz - as a dungeon. I appreciated the author’s willingness to address the question of how dungeons can succeed as either an ecology for the dungeons or as a business model for the adventurers. The author is working with fluff, but doing it well.
