Just One Damned Thing After Another – Jodi Taylor
The title is from the quote “History is just one damned thing after another”. The Chronicles of St Mary’s chronicles the hijinks of historians who have access to time travel. They (the historians and the secretive time-travel organization) seem to believe that time travel is best used to study major (read ‘dangerous’) events. This is the “I’ll get a close-up view of the battle of Waterloo, and hope nobody’s shooting in my general direction” school of historical research.
The writing is solid, and the zaniness of the characters makes most scenes amusing. The characters themselves are shallow - usually the sums of their quirks - which makes it harder to care about the overall story.
